Short
Story
I’m an opera singing scientist engineer theologian computer programmer graphic designer who decided to pick up a pen and paper one day and found out he actually really liked it.
WHY
this particular style
A couple years back I took a look at my daily life and realized I didn’t like what I saw. It seemed like the hours in my day frantically sped by me as I tried to juggle a half-dozen jobs, and when I did find free time, I saw my attention hijacked by endless distractions (Netflix, Facebook, etc.). I needed something to focus on, but I loathe the meditation and mindfulness activities I’ve tried. The need for a last-minute gift for some opera colleagues combined with fervent memories of viewing Picasso’s line drawings turned into my first drawing. I found my meditation in the act of planning and creating these continuous-line drawings. The revision process of reducing a concept to fewer—but more specific—curves evinces the intentionality and mindfulness of meditation with added benefit of a tangible creation at the end. I hope a bit of the humor, awe, and peace that I find creating these carries through to you.
My Process
idea
Inspiration can come from anywhere: daily life, hiking trips, my work in opera, commissions…
broken pieces
Parts such as the windows of the Front Porch Bar, and the eyes, nose, mouth, and outline of my sugar skull were worked out separately until I had an idea of them that I liked.
continous line
Time, patience, willingness to start over. It’s one line in ink on a piece of paper. Sometimes the pen slips as you sign your name and you have to start over completely. It makes me a better person.
